Sakti Wahyu Trenggono

Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of the Republic of Indonesia

Sakti Wahyu Trenggono is a distinguished statesman and the ninth Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of the Republic of Indonesia. He holds the unique distinction of being the only minister in this sector to serve across two different administrations: the Indonesia Maju Cabinet under President Joko Widodo (2020–2024) and the Merah Putih Cabinet under President Prabowo Subianto (2025–2029). Prior to these roles, he served as Deputy Minister of Defense, where he contributed to the nation’s strategic security framework.

He holds a Master’s degree in Development Studies from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and is currently pursuing a Doctoral degree at ITB’s Faculty of Earth Sciences and Technology. His academic background in policy development and earth sciences informs his data-driven approach to governance and natural resource management.
Minister Trenggono is a staunch advocate of environmental stewardship, operating under the principle that ecology serves as the guiding foundation of marine and fisheries management to ensure long-term sustainability. He is the architect of Indonesia’s Five Blue Economy policies, which include the expansion of marine protected areas, the implementation of quota-based measured fishing, sustainable aquaculture development, strict surveillance of coastal areas and small islands, and the pioneering “Fishermen’s Participation” initiative aimed at reducing marine plastic waste.
In recognition of his transformative contributions to the national marine sector and his dedication to advancing the Blue Economy, he was awarded the Bintang Mahaputera Utama by President Joko Widodo in 2024. This prestigious honor underscores his pivotal role in balancing economic growth with marine conservation for the benefit of future generations.
